International Seminar on Jute, Kenaf and Allied Fibres R&D - A Joint Effort of IJSG and CFC to be held on June 8-9, 2011 in Dhaka

A two-day International Seminar on Strengthening of Collaboration for Jute, Kenaf and Allied Fibres Research and Development - A joint effort of International Jute Study Group (IJSG) and the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) has been scheduled to be held on June 8-9, 2011 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

This International Seminar aims at attracting participants mainly from the scientific community, industry, associations, NGOs, members of the commercial sectors and policy makers from different countries concerning natural fibre crop. A total of about 80 participants are expected to attend the technical sessions.

As India and Bangladesh are the two major jute producing countries, Research & development activities and studies on jute are primarily concentrated in India and. However, a number of Government and private sector institutions are engaged in Research, Development, Production and Marketing of the JAF fibre crops in China, Malaysia, Thailand and also some other countries of the world. These researches and studies are being done on different aspects of the fibre and end uses & products, but there is hardly any sharing / exchange of knowledge or expertise. It goes without saying that there is bound to be some duplicity and overlapping. Integration of knowledge and coordinated research on the other hand can synergize knowledge and lead to major break- through. No such effort has been made in the past.

The theme of the Seminar is to strengthen international collaboration for research and development activities in different fields of the JAF crops and products throughout the world; identify the actual areas and needs for R&D; and to develop suitable future programmes in more coordinated way for the improvement of the JAF sector.

To obtain insight in the key driver at research in the field of JAF development and their uses, and to identify synergies through possible joint activities towards strengthening the link between research, product development and market uptake are the main goals.

The specific objectives of the seminar are:

  • To link Research-Production-Market based on the present state of R&D.

  • To integrate, share and exchange knowledge and expertise of scientists/ researchers / experts from key organisations, academic institutions, leading universities, industries, involved in jute, kenaf & allied fibre development.

  • To avoid duplication of R&D activities. To explore possibilities of collaborative R&D by pooling in resources, knowledge and efforts based on the Industry / consumers’ requirements.

  • Consensus identification of the areas and institutions for developing future collaborative R&D activities.

  • To find out ways for application, extension and effective utilisation of R&D results/ outcome.

  • To bridge the gaps & develop a synergy among the scientists/ researchers, industry & consumers.

  • To develop a consumers model for encouraging investment on R&D activities.

  • To prepare a ground for public private partnership in R&D simplifying the procedures for sharing results/outcome.
