|
|
|
A
Forum on the prospect of Jute fibre titled “Golden Fibre in the
Green Development” was organised jointly by the International Jute
Study Group (IJSG) and the Embassy of Bangladesh in Belgium and on
16 November 2012 in Brussels Chambers of Commerce (BECI), Brussels.
The forum was followed by a buyer-sellers meet.
The
event was participated among others by MEP, European Commission
officials, members of Federation of the Belgian Textile, Wood and
Furniture Industry (Fedustria), jute & jute goods traders both from
Europe and Bangladesh, environment groups, think tanks located in
Brussels and Embassy officials. A four member delegation from Dhaka

The meeting was moderated by H.E. the
Ambassador of Bangladesh Ms. Ismat Jahan. In her opening address,
Ambassador Jahan highlighted the growing importance of jute, an
environment friendly natural fibre, particularly in the context of
its increasing significance in “green development”. She underscored
that the jute sector has to reposition itself to explore the
possibilities. Unless it is strongly supported internationally, the
world will be deprived of a valuable eco-friendly fibre.
She
recalled that IJSG was established as sole International Community
Body (ICB) for jute and kenaf in 2002 and it was at the EU’s
initiative that IJSG got its unique mandate of being the only ICB
with specific objective of ‘poverty alleviation’, ‘women
empowerment’ and ‘sustainable development’. Considering the
important mandate of IJSG and the growing significance of the jute
sector globally, she urged EU’s support for extension of IJSG’s
present TOR beyond 2014.
Mr. Bhupendra Singh, Secretary General, IJSG
presented a power point on the prospect of jute fibre describing the
various aspects of innovative use of jute goods and the comparative
advantage of using jute fibre as a viable and sustainable product
for human being. He reiterated the pioneering role of IJSG in
promoting the cause of jute in both producing and consuming
countries and put importance on the private-public partnership in
this sector.
Mr. Seamus Gillespie, Director, EEAS, EC
stated that jute can play an enhanced role in regional integration
between Bangladesh and the EU. He assured the extended support from
EC and reiterated that it is critical to raise these issues from the
Government of Bangladesh to the EU. In her message, MEP Ms. Jean
Lambert, member of the Green Group of the European Parliament hoped
for greater support for the jute sector of Bangladesh.
Other speakers mentioned about enhancing the
standards of the whole supply chain of jute production which is a
preference for the European buyers. They urged upon the producers to
produce fashionable and innovative products so that these products
could go with the transformation of the society at large. They put
importance on the cooperation between producing countries,
international organisations and the policy makers to re-invigorate
the jute sector. A carpet factory visit to BALTA for the
participants was organized on 15 November 2012.

Officer and Mr. Rajib Jones Mitra, Secretary, IJSG visited Myanmar
on a membership drive from October 05-09, 2011.
The IJSG delegation met H.E.

development of the sector. He explained the reasons for the recent
revival of jute in the world. Mr. Singh remarked on the potential of
Myanmar in the jute/kenaf sector in view of the growing world
consciousness of environment and the rising demand of jute goods in
the world market. Pointing out the recent decline in jute
cultivation in Myanmar, Mr. Singh cited the example of Bangladesh
and India where jute cultivation increased by 18-22% in the recent
years and expressed firm belief that Myanmar can also achieve the
same growth by using high yield seed variety. He assured that
Myanmar has a great possibility in finding out opportunities to
revitalize its jute and kenaf sector with the support of IJSG in the
development of jute cultivation, modernization of jute industry,
foreign direct investment and employment generation. Mr. Singh took
the opportunity to show the short film ‘Jute – Its Promises’

The Deputy Minister remarked that the new government of Myanmar is
emphasizing more on paddy than jute. He said, Myanmar has been
growing jute since long but now most of the jute mills are
functioning at less than 20% capacity /efficiency and jute fibre
yield is very less too. Therefore, farmers are losing interest in
growing jute. He also mentioned that Myanmar needs market for its
jute and jute products.
H.E. U Khin Zaw appreciated IJSG’s efforts and was
grateful for their advice. He said, Myanmar certainly has interest
to grow jute and he believes if farmers are provided with High Yield
Variety, then they will surely start growing jute again.

interest to become a member of IJSG and assured to discuss the issue
of IJSG Membership with the Honorable Minister for further perusal.

IJSG Secretary General meets the Deputy Head of Mission of
Embassy of Brazil in Dhaka |
|
|
|
The IJSG Secretary General Mr. Bhupendra Singh met Mr. Felipe
Krause, the Deputy Head of Mission of Embassy of Brazil at
his office in Dhaka to discuss the issue of Membership of Brazil to
IJSG on September 12, 2011 and other jute related matters.
With a warm greeting Mr. Singh started the dialogue and explained
the background, objectives, ongoing activities and the vision of
IJSG. He explained the importance of jute and the reasons for the
recent revival of Jute as a preferred eco friendly alternative to
polythene and other synthetic materials. Brazil was one of the
major producers of jute in 70’s. He pointed out the recent
resurgence of jute in Brazil as evident in the form of some new jute
mills which are recently already established in Brazil. He
appreciated Government of Brazil’s keen interest in patronizing the
jute sectors. He said IJSG is the only ICB of jute and allied
natural fibres which work for promotion of jute sector to address
the issues relating to jute economy. Mr. Singh explained how Brazil
could be benefited by being a member of IJSG and how a big country
like Brazil can play an important role to promote jute at
international level for sustainable development.
Mr. Singh said that, jute is the best alternative for saving the
world environment from the menace of polyethylene and other
synthetic materials. As the use of polyethylene shopping bags have
already been banned in some cities of Brazil there is a huge
potential for jute bags as an alternative.
Mr. Singh also elaborated on the diversified applications of jute
apart from traditional bags and packaging. Jute has become a fashion
icon to the new generation. Most importantly, Brazil will host the
XXXI Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and jute can be an
important substitute for synthetic materials to make this huge event
environment friendly thus making Brazil an icon for Green Olympic.
IJSG can support Brazil in this regard said by the Secretary
General.
Mr. Felipe Krause appreciated IJSG’s vision and activities. He also
expressed his concern regarding threat of polythene posed on
environment. He understood the need of addressing the issues and
necessity to find a suitable alternative for polythene. Mr. Krause
was keen to know the historical background of IJO and Brazil’s
participation. He was asked for the voting procedure and
contribution process for the members. Mr. Singh invited H.E the
Ambassador of Brazil as an observer with a formal letter to IJSG’s
thirteenth council session scheduled to be held on November 03-05,
2011 at IJSG secretariat.
Mr. Krause uttered an assurance to discuss the issue with the
Ambassador and convey the message to the Brazilian government for
necessary action. By the meantime he would be happy to participate
in IJSG’s council sessions and events to have a better idea for
further persuasion of Membership issue with appropriate authority.
Mr. Debrair Izaias da Silva; the Vice Consul, Commercial Attaché,
Mr. Rajib Jones Mitra; Secretary, IJSG and Mrs. Andera Chikako;
Administrative assistant, Brazil Embassy were also present in the

inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Md.
Ashraful Moqbul, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles and Jute (MOTJ),
Government of Bangladesh at the IJSG Secretariat, Dhaka, Bangladesh
on September 4, 2011. In view of the dearth of trained man power who
can play a significant role in properly and effectively managing the
resources, improving the productivity and lowering the conversion
cost, IJSG has taken initiative to organise this training programme
in Bangladesh for the second time. The training programme includes
two modules: Spinning and Weaving. The training on Spinning will be
held during September 4-8, 2011 and the training on Weaving will be
held during September 11-14, 2011. The training is being imparted by
the faculty members of the Department of Jute and Fibre Technology,
Institute of Jute Technology (IJT), University of Calcutta, Kolkata,
India.
In the opening ceremony Prof. (Dr.) Sunil Kumar Sett, Head of the
Department of Jute and Fibre Technology, thanked IJSG for organising
this important training for jute mills personnel again. He said that
this training has the scope to improve skills of all from managerial
to supervisor level. He also stated that the similar programme is
being conducted by IJT in Kolkata, India under Jute Technology
Mission. He remarked that they will disseminate the progresses
achieved recently and discuss the current condition of the jute
industry in Bangladesh and India through the training programme. He
hoped that this training will develop the skills of the participants
in a better way to ensure the sustainability of the jute industry.
Mr. Bhupendra Singh, Secretary General of IJSG, welcomed the Chief
Guest, Faculty members of IJT and all the Participants from various
industries. He thanked Govt. of Bangladesh and IJT, India and the
industries who provided their supports to organise the training for
the second time. He also remarked that IJSG was expecting to have
trainees from neighboring countries i.e., India, Nepal, Pakistan,
Myanmar and Thailand. In the first training, there were seven
participants from Pakistan. The Secretary General requested the
Chief Guest, Secretary, Ministry of Textile and Jute, Bangladesh to
consider more contribution as IJSG may organise this kind of skill
development training three to four times a year. He also requested
the trainers to get the evaluation/feedbacks from the trainees at
the end of the training so as to improve the training module and for
other necessary amendments in future.
The Chief Guest, Mr. Md. Ashraful Moqbul, Secretary, MOTJ,
Bangladesh appreciated IJSG for organising the similar novel
training for the jute industry personnel for the second-time in
Bangladesh. He said that this is very encouraging that the
industries felt the necessity of the training and actively
participating in this training programme again. He also commented
about the training module as it is divided into two significant
parts: Spinning and Weaving. The Secretary, MOTJ suggested
organising similar training programme in Kolkata, India as the
participants may share the knowledge and be acquainted with the
latest applications in Indian jute industry. He requested the jute
industries/ associations/ corporations to consider raising their
contribution towards jute R&D which will also help IJSG to organise
more skill development programme like this in future. He remarked
that IJSG may not be able to continue these kinds of trainings
without having contributions from others or the participating
industries. He also suggested to get the training feedbacks from the
participants to know their views on the training. |

T.D. Mitra thanked IJSG for holding such a seminar on important
issues relating to jute.

International Seminar on Jute, Kenaf and Allied Fibres
R&D - A Joint Effort of IJSG and CFC to be held on
June 8-9, 2011 in Dhaka |
|
|
|
A two-day International Seminar on Strengthening
of Collaboration for Jute, Kenaf and Allied Fibres Research
and Development - A joint effort of International Jute Study
Group (IJSG) and the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) has
been scheduled to be held on
June 8-9, 2011 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
This International Seminar aims at attracting
participants mainly from the scientific community, industry,
associations, NGOs, members of the commercial sectors and
policy makers from different countries concerning natural
fibre crop. A total of about 80 participants are expected to
attend the technical sessions.
As India and Bangladesh are the two major jute
producing countries, Research & development activities and
studies on jute are primarily concentrated in India and.
However, a number of Government and private sector
institutions are engaged in Research, Development,
Production and Marketing of the JAF fibre crops in China,
Malaysia, Thailand and also some other countries of the
world. These researches and studies are being done on
different aspects of the fibre and end uses & products, but
there is hardly any sharing / exchange of knowledge or
expertise. It goes without saying that there is bound to be
some duplicity and overlapping. Integration of knowledge and
coordinated research on the other hand can synergize
knowledge and lead to major break- through. No such effort
has been made in the past.
The theme of the Seminar is to strengthen
international collaboration for research and development
activities in different fields of the JAF crops and products
throughout the world; identify the actual areas and needs
for R&D; and to develop suitable future programmes in more
coordinated way for the improvement of the JAF sector.
To obtain insight in the key driver at research
in the field of JAF development and their uses, and to
identify synergies through possible joint activities towards
strengthening the link between research, product development
and market uptake are the main goals.
The specific objectives of the seminar are:
-
To link Research-Production-Market based on the present state of
R&D.
-
To integrate, share and exchange knowledge and expertise of
scientists/ researchers / experts from key organisations,
academic institutions, leading universities, industries,
involved in jute, kenaf & allied fibre development.
-
To avoid duplication of R&D activities. To explore possibilities of
collaborative R&D by pooling in resources, knowledge and
efforts based on the Industry / consumers’ requirements.
-
Consensus identification of the areas and institutions for
developing future collaborative R&D activities.
-
To find out ways for application, extension and effective
utilisation of R&D results/ outcome.
-
To bridge the gaps & develop a synergy among the scientists/
researchers, industry & consumers.
-
To develop a consumers model for encouraging investment on R&D
activities.
-
To prepare a ground for public private partnership in
R&D simplifying the procedures for sharing
results/outcome.
