Consultative Boards : |

The Consultative
Board held eight meetings on 17 December 2002, 10 June 2003,
26-27 February 2004, 17 April 2005, 8 March 2006, 24-25 November
2006, 06 August 2007 & 17 March 2008 and made important
recommendations to the Council. |

Recommendations / Decisions made by the Consultative Board : |

(a) |
Jute
Seeds : |
|
|
|
Research
needs to focus on high quality (fibre) and high yielding seeds. A system for distribution
of certified and truthfully labelled seeds needs to be set up. |
|
|
(b) |
Increasing Farmers'
income : |
|
|
|
A suitable system needs to
be evolved for price stabilisation of raw jute. |
|
|
(c) |
Research
and Development : |
|
|
|
Research needs to start from retting/softening of fibre and spinning.
Specific yarns/fabrics needs to be developed for specific applications. Standards for
various applications need to be set up. Research also needs to focus on cost reduction,
development and modernisation of machinery, and spinning and weaving of lighter yarn and
fabrics and at higher speeds. Research needs to focus on developing products, which can
compete with cheap synthetics. |

Technical
Textiles : |
|
|
|
The area of technical textiles has large opportunities for growth.
Technical Textiles, application oriented products need to be developed particularly in
geotextiles and composites. Even in the areas of packaging, market-led product innovation
is necessary. Low-cost housing could be another area of focus. |
